The CLPNM Board of Directors has approved a new practice direction to provide guidance on the requirements for the appropriate use of clinical decision tools (CDTs) by licensed practical nurses (LPNs) in Manitoba.
CDTs are adopted in many practice settings to guide the assessment, diagnosis and/or treatment of client-specific clinical problems. They are used for situations where clients or populations are at risk for potentially harmful delays because of barriers to timely access to services, or for health situations that arise unexpectedly and require an immediate response.
By clarifying when CDTs are an appropriate and valid authorizing mechanism for LPNs, the CLPNM intends to promote access to care, particularly for Manitobans who receive care in environments where other members of the health care team are less available.
