Survey on Entry-Level Competencies for Canadian LPNs

Dear Registrants and Key Stakeholders,

We are writing to you to ask for your help with a very important initiative for the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) profession in Canada. The Canadian Council of Practical Nurse Regulators (CCPNR), is a group of eleven member regulators in Canada, who are responsible for the safety of the public through the regulation of LPNs/RPNs. CCPNR has been working on revising and updating the Entry-Level Competencies (ELCs) for LPNs in Canada. These competencies describe the knowledge, skill, judgment and attitude required of beginning practitioners to provide safe, competent, and ethical nursing care. This document is used for a number of purposes such as:

  • Public and employer awareness of the practice expectations of the entry-level LPN
  • Approval/recognition of LPN educational programs
  • Assessment of internationally-educated applicants
  • Curriculum development
  • Exam blueprinting
  • Providing practice advice to registrants

We are asking for your input about these revised competencies by giving you the opportunity to respond to the Licensed Practical Nurse Entry-Level Competencies Survey. The survey is designed to validate the proposed ELCs. The survey can be accessed at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ELCPN. The survey is also available in French and may be accessed at https://fr.surveymonkey.com/r/IAA.

Completing the survey should take you approximately 30 minutes; note that you will not be able to save and return at a later time, so please do your best to complete it once you start. Please note that the closing date for the survey is March 15, 2019. Your answers will be kept strictly confidential; only aggregate data will be used for analysis and reporting.

All LPNs registered in participating jurisdictions and other related stakeholder groups will be given an opportunity to participate in this survey. For more information about this project, please email info@clpnm.ca. If you encounter technical difficulty with any aspect of the survey you can email the survey analyst for help at LPNETPC@ccpnr.ca.

We encourage you to complete the survey and make sure your voice is heard as these revised ELCs are finalized!
