To support safe and competent practice, the CLPNM Board of Directors recently approved a practice hour requirement for entry into self-employed LPN practice. LPNs must first accumulate at least 2,015 hours of Canadian practice as an employed LPN before transitioning to self-employment.
This experience, which may be achieved over one year of full-time work (or longer if part-time), provides essential opportunities for supervision, guidance, and skill development before practising independently.
The requirement to obtain the equivalent of one year of experience before moving into self-employed practice mirrors the CLPNM’s expectations for LPNs who wish to practise through nursing agencies. Similar expectations have also been established by the regulatory bodies for Manitoba’s other nursing professionals.
