Duty to Provide Care

The College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Manitoba (CLPNM) has developed two documents to help practical nurses understand their professional and legal responsibilities related to the duty to provide care.

The practice direction provides an overview of practical nurses’ expectations related to the duty to provide care.  All practical nurses – including student practical nurses, graduate practical nurses, and licensed practical nurses – are expected to review, understand and comply with the information disseminated in practice directions.

The CLPNM has also developed a more detailed guidance document  in collaboration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba and the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba. The guidance document is intended to support the practice direction by explaining the duty to provide care in greater detail. If there is any conflict between the guidance document, and the practice direction, the practice direction takes precedence for practical nurses in Manitoba.
