Guidance for Nurses: Medical Cannabis

The College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Manitoba (CLPNM), College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) and College Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba (CRPNM) have updated the Medical Cannabis Guidelines to address nurses’ authority to administer medical cannabis in personal care homes in Manitoba.

Review the updated guidelines here.

Readers should note that the guidance in this document reflects the information available to the three nursing colleges at this time. Administration of cannabis for medical purposes is a new area of practice, and interpretations of federal regulations may evolve. In addition, the implications of the new Cannabis Act on nurses’ authority to administer medical cannabis are not yet fully understood. The CLPNM continues to work with other regulators, government representatives and other stakeholders to clarify the implications.  The nursing colleges may add to, or amend, the guidance document as new information becomes known.
