Graduate Practical Nurses

Any person who wishes to practise as a graduate practical nurse (GPN) in Manitoba must be registered with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Manitoba (CLPNM).

An applicant for registration as a GPN may have their name entered on the register of graduate practical nurses once they have met all criteria for registration as an LPN, other than successfully completing the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination.

New as of December 1, 2023: the liability protection that Manitoba’s GPNs must hold is the professional liability protection made available by the Canadian Nurses Protective Society (CNPS) with a minimum limit of protection of five (5) million dollars, renewed annually.  Please see here for more information. All GPNs will be required to register for CNPS Professional Liability Protection and Core Services as part of their GPN application process.

While waiting to complete the national examination, GPNs are required to practise under the supervision of another regulated nurse (LPN, RN or RPN).

For more information about GPN registration and practice requirements, please see the Practice Direction on Graduate Practical Nurse Practice.
